Search 'bible verse for birthday' and the first page is mostly generic birthday-message sites — the same kind of site that also sells anniversary quotes and good-morning texts, rarely a place that treats the Bible as a source. The reference, when one shows up at all, is often wrong or just missing: the line floats there with no book, no chapter, no verse. This list works differently — grouped by use, with every reference checked against the original text.

There are verses to write in a birthday message, verses for your own birthday — the day for gratitude, not just gifts —, verses grouped by who's receiving them, because what you'd write to your mother isn't what you'd write to a friend, and short verses that fit on a card or in a text.

Writing to someone you see every day isn't the same as writing to someone you only see once a year — and the format of the card or message changes what fits, too. That's why this list follows that logic of use start to finish, instead of just stacking verses by theme.

The verses below follow the Berean Standard Bible (BSB), a modern English translation dedicated to the public domain — free to quote, copy, and share without restriction. Each one was checked against that source verse by verse before it went on this list.

Bible Verses for a Birthday Message

These are the closest to what most people are actually looking for: a line ready to write in a card or send in a text to whoever's having a birthday. The difference is citing the reference — it turns a nice-sounding line into something the person can go check for themselves.

May the LORD bless you and keep you; may the LORD cause His face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; may the LORD lift up His countenance toward you and give you peace.
Numbers 6:24-26
May He give you the desires of your heart and make all your plans succeed.
Psalm 20:4
I thank my God every time I remember you. In every prayer for all of you, I always pray with joy, because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
Philippians 1:3-6
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, to give you a future and a hope.
Jeremiah 29:11
The LORD will guard you from all evil; He will preserve your soul. The LORD will watch over your coming and going, both now and forevermore.
Psalm 121:7-8
Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Romans 15:13
Commit your works to the LORD and your plans will be achieved.
Proverbs 16:3
Beloved, I pray that in every way you may prosper and enjoy good health, as your soul also prospers.
3 John 1:2

For Your Own Birthday: Gratitude for Life

A birthday is also the day of the person having it — and the Bible has fewer verses about receiving gifts than it has about stopping to look back with gratitude. These are for that: to read on your own day, not just to send to someone else.

For You formed my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Marvelous are Your works, and I know this very well. My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in secret, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all my days were written in Your book and ordained for me before one of them came to be.
Psalm 139:13-16
So teach us to number our days, that we may present a heart of wisdom.
Psalm 90:12
Because of the loving devotion of the LORD we are not consumed, for His mercies never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness!
Lamentations 3:22-23
This is the day that the LORD has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.
Psalm 118:24
To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven.
Ecclesiastes 3:1
Even to your old age, I will be the same, and I will bear you up when you turn gray. I have made you, and I will carry you; I will sustain you and deliver you.
Isaiah 46:4

Birthday Verses by Who's Receiving Them

What fits your mother almost never fits a friend from college — and that's where most birthday-quote sites miss, dropping the same generic line on anyone. Here they're grouped by who's actually going to read them.

For a Mother

A mother tends to get the most emotionally loaded verse of the bunch — the three below circle around strength, comfort, and the pride she stirs up in her children.

Strength and honor are her clothing, and she can laugh at the days to come.
Proverbs 31:25
As a mother comforts her son, so will I comfort you, and you will be consoled over Jerusalem.
Isaiah 66:13
Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband praises her as well.
Proverbs 31:28

For a Father

With a father, the emphasis shifts: integrity, compassion, and the job of raising kids without provoking them — three angles generic birthday lists barely touch.

The righteous man walks with integrity; blessed are his children after him.
Proverbs 20:7
As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear Him.
Psalm 103:13
Fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath; instead, bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
Ephesians 6:4

For a Son or Daughter

For a son or daughter, Scripture talks more about heritage and the road ahead than about the party itself — the three verses below follow that lead.

Children are indeed a heritage from the LORD, and the fruit of the womb is His reward.
Psalm 127:3
I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.
3 John 1:4
Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.
Proverbs 22:6

For a Friend

Between friends the tone shifts again: loyalty, company, and the idea that sharing life with someone is already, on its own, a blessing.

A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
Proverbs 17:17
Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor. For if one falls down, his companion can lift him up; but pity the one who falls without another to help him up!
Ecclesiastes 4:9-10
Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.
John 15:13

Short Birthday Verses for a Card or Text

If there's not much room — a small card, a story caption, a text message — these fit in one line and still say something real, instead of just filling space.

You have made known to me the path of life; You will fill me with joy in Your presence, with eternal pleasures at Your right hand.
Psalm 16:11
The blessing of the LORD enriches, and He adds no sorrow to it.
Proverbs 10:22
For His anger is fleeting, but His favor lasts a lifetime. Weeping may stay the night, but joy comes in the morning.
Psalm 30:5
For the LORD God is a sun and a shield; the LORD gives grace and glory; He withholds no good thing from those who walk with integrity.
Psalm 84:11
And my God will supply all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:19
It is good to praise the LORD, and to sing praises to Your name, O Most High.
Psalm 92:1

How to Choose and Use a Birthday Verse

  • Think about who's going to read it before you pick one — a verse about children sounds off sent to a single friend, even a beautiful one.
  • Cite the reference along with the text. It costs a handful of characters and turns the line into something the other person can look up for themselves, instead of a quote they just have to trust is accurate.
  • Pair the verse with a line in your own words. 'Happy birthday, [name]!' before or after the quote keeps the message from reading like a printed card you only copied.
  • A blessing verse, like Numbers 6:24-26, works for almost anyone. The ones grouped by mother, father, child, or friend ask a little more attention — they say something specific about that role, and that's what sets them apart from a generic line.
  • If the person isn't religious, a softer verse — one of the gratitude-for-life ones, rather than the explicit blessing verses — usually reads more natural than a quote loaded with church language.
  • If you're posting it publicly instead of sending it straight to the person, reach for one of the short verses in the last section — they hold up better outside the context of a personal message, without reading oddly in a caption.

On Terra Gospel you can highlight any of these thirty-two verses in four colors, write your own note next to one — the name of who you want to send it to, say — and keep them together in Favorites, free, alongside reading the whole Bible in English, Portuguese, and Spanish and the verse of the day. If one of these landed for you, it's worth opening the full chapter it's from before you send it — that's where the line picks up the context it has in the original.
